Overview
| Complete manuscript of a short Thai-language sermon on the seven treasures of the noble ones, with brief Pali passages, based on the Pali Ariyadhana-sutta in the Aṅguttara-nikāya. Like most Pali-Thai bitexts, it begins with a citation of a Pali text, but this “text” is not, in fact, the Ariyadhana-sutta or even a passage found in the Pali canon at all, but rather a Pali passage invented for the sake of the bitextual sermon. It then unpacks this in a bilingual Pali-Thai format, mostly in Thai with only very brief Pali passages. This is a common sermon manuscript, likely composed in the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries; versions of this same bitextual sermon circulate in Pali-Khmer versions in Cambodia as well during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. |
